01 Photo-Curio Photo-Curio Chicago, IL

Formed in Chicago in early 2014 when Ben Pfeifer (bass and vocals) and Robie Anson (guitar and vocals) met in a guitar workshop, Photo-Curio grew into a four-piece with the addition of Matt Haddock (guitar) and Melissa Scales (drums and vocals). They took their name from the former factory where they rehearsed — a space once used to make photo albums and memorabilia. Their music blends atmospheric drone-rock noise, melodic finger-picking, and a rhythm section that pumps, rumbles and pulses underneath it all. Drawing on Deerhunter, the Replacements, Nirvana, and Sonic Youth, they arrived at a sound that is in equal measures rock, psychedelic, experimental, and pop. Their debut EP was recorded in 2015; EP No. 2 followed on IVR006.

02 The God Eaters The God Eaters Marquette, MI

A rock 'n' roll trio from the icy college town of Marquette, MI, churning out a sound balanced between the controlled chaos of abrasive noise, heavy riffs, and pummeling rhythms, and slower, harmonic, dreamy soundscapes. The band is drummer Nick Erickson, guitarist/vocalist Dylan Trost, and bassist Devyn Trost. Drawing on Touch and Go, Dischord, Fela Kuti, Captain Beefheart, John Coltrane, and the surrounding Lake Superior forests, their lyrical content is vulnerable, cynical, mindful, and rife with inside jokes. Saxophonists Patrick Booth and Mike Bjella join when available, pushing the sound further into experimental territory. Their 4-song EP Fading Horizons was recorded at Electrical Audio by Eliya Gwetta and Neal Markowski.

03 Phantom Works Phantom Works Chicago, IL

Formed in 2008 by Chicago housemates with a list of things to do and a list of things not to do. Drawing from heavier mid-western and west coast post-punk and their own experimental tendencies, they create a potent, driving, high-energy brew. In 2015 they added bassist Reg Shrader (Seam, Circus Lupus), whose playing adds weight and momentum to their already massive sound. Drummer Jim Duffy (Lardo) pounds things out at the nucleus, steering the swarm of colliding guitars and vocals by Matt Seifert (Cool Devices) and Kris Poulin. Their 4-song Ohms EP was recorded in their Chicago hideout, mixed at SDRL in San Diego, and mastered by Carl Saff.

04 Nathaniel Braddock Nathaniel Braddock Cambridge, MA

Best known as an electric guitarist in African styles bands the Occidental Brothers Dance Band Int'l and Trio Mokili, Braddock has also played in indie rock bands including Ancientgreeks, The Zincs and the Australian band Songs, and in the avant-garde chamber metal group the Butcher Shop Quartet. A touring music lecturer and ten-year faculty member at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music, he has collaborated with Moussa Diakeate, Sidi Toure, Koo Nimo and others, performing at the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Montreal, Vancouver and Chicago Jazz Fests, and Pitchfork Festival. His album Quadrille & Collapse — the label's only 12" LP, also on CD — was recorded in Melbourne and draws on years of studying and performing American and British folk guitar.

Invertebrata Records

Invertebrata Records is a Chicago-based, artist-owned, artist-run DIY record label formed in 2015. I specialize in 10" vinyl EPs, because it's my favorite format, and I put out music I'm involved in making as well as music made by my friends.

Generally my releases are in small runs, frequently on interesting colored vinyl and come with digital download cards so you can listen to the music however you want. Records are sold on Bandcamp and at live shows to maximize the return to the artists involved. Shipping is only within North America because shipping internationally is unreasonably expensive.

If you'd like to find out more, or if you make something that doesn't quite fit anywhere else, feel free to get in touch.
